A coverstitch machine is a specialist sewing machine used for creating professional looking hems, seams and decorative stitching on garments using a 'cover stitch.' A cover stitch creates two or three parallel lines of straight stitches on one side of the fabric and an overlocking or serger style stitch on the other side of the fabric. This is especially useful when working with knit or jersey fabrics - the stitches have more flexibility than stitches sewn on a standard sewing machine and are less likely to break as the garment moves and stretches with wear.

The coverstitch is created by two or three needles in the needle bar and loopers like those found on an overlocker or serger.

Coverstich machines usually have a differential feed, which allows you to adjust the rates at which the feeddogs feed the fabric through the machine to avoid it being overstretched as you sew, which can happen more easily on a standard sewing machine.

You will also have the option to adjust the thread tension to suit the different types of fabric you might want to work with and achieve a neat, even stitch.

A coverstitch machine doesn't replace the need for a standard sewing machine, but can be used alongside one and an overlocker/serger to create garments with an exceptionally neat and professional looking finish. You can create hems, attach neckbands, cuffs and waistbands and create decorative top stitching to rival the standards you would see in your favourite high end High Street stores.
